You might think to yourself that SEO and web design are two completely different services a website firm offers. But in reality, one service depends on the other to ensure a website’s success online; thus the phrase “SEO Web Design”.

SEO or Search Engine Optimization is the process of making the content of web pages relevant to searchers and search engines so that it can be easily found when searched for. Web design is the creation of web pages that make up a website. When the two combine it creates a strong marketing medium for your business.

Initial Planning

Being prepared is always a first step when you start a website. First, you will need to plan out your pages. Starting with the homepage, list what information you will provide as content. Next, list the pages that will branch out from your homepage (Services, Products, About Us, Contact Us, etc.). This will be your initial navigation structure.

Once you have your pages planned out, you can start to develop content for them. When writing website copy, it is a good idea to write keyword rich text and have a minimum of 250 words per page. But it is very important to keep your text relevant. It doesn’t make sense to write about an unrelated subject on your services page.

Into SEO Web Design

It is important that you choose a web designer that fully understands how to create SEO-friendly websites. These sites are built for users and the search engines in mind. The pages should be laid out so that the content can be read and understood by every visitor, even those with disabilities.

Some navigations on websites prevent search engines and users with disabilities from browsing the site in its entirety. Make sure that your navigations are free of Flash and Javascript. Navigations that are plain text or CSS-driven will work perfectly in nearly every situation.

Links in paragraphs of text are very important for SEO web design. Make sure that your links stick out so that users can tell the difference between regular text and hyperlinks. If they are not, your visitors can get pretty frustrated.

Conclusion

So you’ve got a visually appealing website, full of great content and pages that are easy to navigate to. Your header and title tags are optimized for the best performance and your content is full of relevant keywords. By utilizing the SEO web design combination, you have successfully launched a great web site that is already setup for good search engine rankings. It’s a good idea to sit back and take a break as your site gets indexed.

In part one of our series, we chose the search phrase “michiganseo web design” to see if we could get more traffic from this misspelled search term. Here are the results…

The Term: michiganseo web design

We selected this key phrase from a keyword research tool called Wordtracker. We performed a search for the keywords “web design” and it just so happened that michiganseo web design is the third most popular searched term related to web design.

Upon publishing part one, within just three minutes, that page overtook the number one position. Now three days later, our page is still sitting at number one. (Google)

But as we mentioned in our previous post of this series, we mentioned not to base all of your optimization efforts on just one key phrase, since keyword research tools can have their results inflated. Unfortunately for us, this is one of those cases.

The term for us returned absolutely no traffic. Given the popularity of the term, we should of at least gained one unique hit from our number one ranking, but that was not the case. The term is most likely inflated in keyword research tools.

In conclusion, in the world of finding popular keywords with low competition, it is mostly hit or miss. In our case, it was a miss. When picking keywords for your site, it is important to choose terms that are related to other pages on your site. In our case, web design was a decent choice.

We hope that this series has pointed you in the right direction and have giving you an idea of the value of misspelled search terms.

This is the first of a multi-part series on capitalizing on misspelled search terms to gain more web site traffic.

The main purpose of this post is to show you the benefits of finding a misspelled search term to gain some web site traffic.

The term: michiganseo web design

Estimated search volume: 933

Number of sites in results for term: 5,940

From this research it appears that there is quite a bit of people looking for “michiganseo web design” and very few web sites competing for that term. To capitalize on reaching a top 10 ranking for this term in Google, we will create a blog post (such as this one) that will use michiganseo web design throughout it’s context. But we will be very careful to not overuse the key phrase. The post title and meta tags will be optimized as well.

When finding a misspelled, yet popular keyword, it is important stop and think for a minute of why the term is so popular. For the term we have selected in this example, it appears that people in Michigan are searching for SEO and web design. But this isn’t always the case. Some keyword research tools can have their results inflated with terms like these. So it is important not to base all of your search engine optimization efforts to just one term.

In the next few days we will review our efforts and see if this term is real or just a fluke in keyword research.

Understand how the allinanchor operator is helpful with SEO.

Decent search engine rankings are based on good relevant links to your website. By building solid quality backlinks to your pages, you are bettering your chances to rank well for a search term. Among Google’s handy advanced search queries, there is one called allinanchor. This handy operator allows you to see how well your link building really is working. It also allows you to take a better look at your competition as well.

To test this out search for: “allinanchor:your keyword here“ to see where you rank as far as how Google sees you based on your linking.

To see a comparison on where you rank in the normal results versus the allinanchor results you can use the McDar Keyword Analysis Tool.

Robots.txt is commonly referred to as the robot exclusion protocol. This refers to the act of including a robots.txt file in a web directory, with the purpose of telling web crawlers and search engines not to index certain areas of a web site.

This method is not fool-proof, however, and should not be considered a way to securitize a website. For instance, most search engines and crawlers will abide by the robots.txt file on a web server- but there are no rules saying that they can’t. This means that sensitive data can still be available to public searching, and that better security should be implemented.

Robots.txt is mainly used for editing and creating code or designing web sites that creators do not wish to make public yet. This is also an application of search engine optimization. If a website owner were to upload only part of a page, it would most likely suffer a negative effect of SEO, rather than what a full page of complete information would.

Lastly, this method is great for those who are worried about bandwidth. Bandwidth can be very costly to website owners, and web crawlers or search engines use a lot of bandwidth in indexing pages of a webpage. To prevent a web crawler from crawling a site too frequently, this is one of the best solutions to save bandwidth- although less traffic will most likely result from search engines.

Overall, there many uses for the robots.txt file. In order to use the protocol, certain commands and syntaxes must be followed. Once this is learned, a webmaster can enjoy the benefits of having a working robots.txt file to serve in its many applications- from saving bandwidth to allowing for a little more time for changes or edits to a webpage before it goes public.
